Sustainability & Community Impact
The Banda Islands are a global treasure—a delicate and irreplaceable ecosystem teeming with life, and a cultural landscape rich with history. At Banda Islands Diving, we believe that to operate in such a place is not a right, but a privilege that comes with a profound responsibility of guardianship. Our approach to sustainability is not a marketing initiative; it is a core operational principle that guides every decision we make. Our goal is to ensure that our presence enhances, protects, and preserves the natural and cultural heritage of the Banda Sea for generations to come.
Our Environmental Commitments: Protecting the Pristine
We are dedicated to minimizing our environmental footprint and actively contributing to marine conservation through a multi-faceted approach.
- Marine Conservation Partnerships: We actively support the work of organizations like WWF Indonesia and The Nature Conservancy by contributing a portion of our profits to their local conservation programs. Our guides also contribute valuable marine life sighting data, particularly for pelagic species like hammerhead sharks and mantas, to aid scientific research.
- Zero-Tolerance for Single-Use Plastics: All our partner vessels have strict policies to eliminate single-use plastics. Guests are provided with reusable water bottles and thermoses. Toiletries are supplied in refillable, biodegradable containers. We work with our suppliers in Ambon to reduce plastic packaging in our provisions.
- Advanced Waste Management: Our vessels are equipped with modern wastewater treatment systems. All solid waste is meticulously sorted, compacted, and transported back to the mainland for responsible disposal and recycling. Nothing is ever discharged into the sea.
- Responsible On-Site Practices: We adhere to a strict ‘no-touch, no-take’ policy on all dives. Our captains are experts in responsible anchoring, utilizing designated mooring buoys wherever possible to protect the reef. We also organize and participate in regular reef and beach clean-up initiatives.
- Carbon Offsetting: We acknowledge the carbon footprint of travel. We are developing a partnership with a Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) certified Indonesian reforestation project, such as the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve, to offer our guests a transparent and effective way to offset the emissions from their flights and liveaboard journey.
Our Community Commitments: Empowering Local People
Sustainable tourism must benefit the communities that call the destination home. We are committed to creating a positive and lasting social impact in the Banda Islands.
- Local Employment and Development: We maintain a policy of hiring locally wherever possible. Over 80% of our vessel crew and on-the-ground support staff are from Maluku and other parts of Eastern Indonesia. We invest in their professional development through continuous training in safety, hospitality, and dive guiding.
- Sourcing from Local Economies: We prioritize purchasing fresh produce, fish, and other provisions from local markets in Banda Neira and surrounding villages. This practice not only provides our guests with the freshest local ingredients but also directly supports the livelihoods of local farmers and fishermen.
- Community Development Fund: A dedicated portion of every trip booking is allocated to our Community Development Fund. These funds are used to support local initiatives, which have included providing educational supplies to the school in Pulau Hatta and contributing to the upkeep of historical sites like Fort Belgica in partnership with local heritage groups.
- Promotion of Culture and Crafts: We facilitate respectful cultural exchanges, allowing guests to learn about the unique history and traditions of the Bandanese people. We also provide a platform for local artisans to sell their crafts, such as nutmeg jam, cinnamon bark, and traditional ‘tenun’ ikat weavings, directly to our guests at a fair price.
Our commitment is simple: to leave the Banda Islands a better, more protected, and more prosperous place than we found them. This is our promise to the environment, to the community, and to you, our guest.
